Rathcon Christmas Tree Farm
Rathcon is a family run farm that has been growing Christmas trees since 1989. Richard planted his first field of Noble fir over 30 years ago and now he and his son Dermot, farm 100 acres of trees. Our main species grown is Nordmann fir whose origins come from Georgia near Russia. It has a beautiful dark green colour with good needle retention and is full bodied. We are also growing Noble fir from western America which has a lovely smell, a blue green colour and also good needle retention.
We supply Christmas trees from 3ft to 20ft to garden centres and other retail outlets throughout Ireland and the UK.
Rathcon farm prides itself on the care and attention the trees are given. The tree arrives from the nursery after 4 years of its life and is then planted in our fields for a further 7-10 years where it provides a perfect habitat for bird and insect life. For every tree that is harvested we plant two to replace it allowing for a continuous carbon sink and rich habitat.
We are focused on practicing biological farming for our trees and are reducing our synthetic inputs, feeding the soil biology, managing the soil organic carbon and utilising livestock integration.
All of which help to produce a top quality, healthy and happy tree!
Caring for the Ecosystem
We are very sensitive to the balance of the ecology of the farm, making sure we respect that balance daily.
Planting Trees
We plant up to 25,000 trees per year to supply the Irish and European markets.
